Description

20 English Holly seeds (Ilex aquifolium) wild-harvested in Washington state.

Planetary Attribute: Mars

Propagation: While Ilex aquifolium may take up to two years to germinate, the process can be aided by soaking in water (cold to room temperature) for 48 hours, and changing the water every twelve hours subsequently. Stratification can take place with up to sixty days warm, followed by sixty days cold temperature. Over winter, keep potting soil in bags or outbuildings for protection from complete freezing, and in the summer keep in mid-shade in potting soil, moist. Sow seeds 3/8" inch deep in well-draining potting soil. English Holly does best as a hedge, with mid-shade and not too much full sun during hot summers. Sides or corners of buildings with other trees nearby help to keep English Holly partially shaded. This is an evergreen, with bright red berries in the winter. Well known as a sign of Yule, Saturnalia and Christmas.
